COUNCIL OF CHRISTIANS AND JEWS
BIRMINGHAM BRANCH

CCJ The Council of Christians and Jews is a national organisation which works through local branches around the UK and Northern Ireland. It came into being during the darkest days of World War Two against the background of the Holocaust. The Council was inaugurated in 1942 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr William Temple, and Chief Rabbi Dr Hertz. Today it has more than 50 branches and over 4000 members. CCJ's primary aim is to promote dialogue and understanding. It encourages Christians and Jews to appreciate and respect each other's distinctive beliefs whilst recognising their common ground. Here in Birmingham we meet roughly once a month, usually at Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre, on the Bristol Rd. Our topics range from music and art, through theology and history, to issues of current concern. Some evenings are formal lectures, others informal discussion. FREDERICK JACOMBS AND EVA BLOOM SPORTS LODGE NO. 64

e-mail: goisd.birm@brijnet.org

The Frederick Jacombs Sports Lodge No. 64 was first registered as a branch of the Grand Order of Israel and Shield of David Friendly Society, under the Friendly Societies Act of 1896, on 9th October 1935. In those early years before the establishment of the National Health Service its main objective was to provide various sickness/death benefits through the voluntary contributions of its members.

In the years since then the Lodge has consistently flourished and has benefited by the amalgamation to form the Frederick Jacombs and Eva Bloom Sports Lodge No. 64. Although the Lodge still retains its welcome benefits, a particular attraction for young and old alike is its sporting and social events, the organisation and success of which is a matter of great pride. Socials are held regularly on the last Tuesday of each month commencing at 8.15 pm. and prospective members are very welcome to join. Sporting events are held throughout the year.

The Lodge is considered unique in that it attracts members from all age groups and from all levels of religious observance, all mixing socially in the true spirit of Jewish brotherhood. It is on these fundamentals that the Order is based - that of a truly friendly society.
