The Jewish day begins at sundown, therefore all these festivals & other special days begin on the evening before
In broad terms there are three broad divisions concerning whether work can be done on these days:
1. The first group is of those on which work is NOT permitted
Shabbat - the seventh day of each week
Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur (black background) falling in September/October
Succot - 1st & 2nd days & Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah (orange background) falling in September/October
Pesach - 1st & 2nd, 7th & 8th days (orange background) falling in March/April
Shavuout (orange background) falling in May/June
2. The middle group is those on which whilst work is permitted some Jewish people may prefer not to work
the Intermediate days of Succot & Pesach (yellow background) September/October & March/April
Purim (light blue background) February/March
Tisha B'Av (light grey background) a 25 hour fast July/August
3. The last group are those special days on which work is permitted
Four fasts these are sunrise-sunset (white background)
1. Tzom Gedaliah after Rosh hasahanah falling in September/October
2. 10 Tevet after Chanukah falling in December/January
3. Taanit Esther immeditely before Purim falling in February/March
4. 17 Tammuz falling in June/July
